Mount Tongariro - shooting off steam
Mount Tongariro - when we visited past it last weekend it was shooting off steam from the mountain.
This area is NZ's oldest national park and is considered extremely important in Maori culture. There are many walks and treks but you have to be pretty experienced to attempt these, quite a few people have to be rescued because they are ill prepared for the temperatures and the terrain. Not only that but it also offers hunting of red deer and mountain biking.
A truly special place :-)

Creepy seeing steam issuing from the ground like that, It would freak me out a bit
Amazing sight. Those steam blast are awesome to see.
That's a great photo with the steam against the blue sky. A very different mountainous area from any I've seen.
Interesting, and I love looking at your winter July pic because it is so hot here.
Fantastic photo! The blue sky really highlights the steam. Love your cover photo, it a wonderful winter scene.
Have a wonderful week, Amy.
I think I saw this when I visited NZ many years ago :) Never ends, does it?
beautiful mountain photo ...that steam is incredible! I can understand why it would be important to your Maori people ... it would be to me if I lived near.
Excellent shot!
I've seen it from every direction and it has to be one of the most iconic of the volcanoes in North Island although most people would probably recognise Mount Taranaki first.
Great shots of steam vents. I have seen some steam coming out from under the snow at the ski fields in this area.
