Mount Tongariro - shooting off steam

Mount Tongariro - when we visited past it last weekend it was shooting off steam from the mountain.

This area is NZ's oldest national park and is considered extremely important in Maori culture. There are many walks and treks but you have to be pretty experienced to attempt these, quite a few people have to be rescued because they are ill prepared for the temperatures and the terrain. Not only that but it also offers hunting of red deer and mountain biking.

A truly special place :-)

That's a great photo with the steam against the blue sky. A very different mountainous area from any I've seen.

beautiful mountain photo ...that steam is incredible! I can understand why it would be important to your Maori people ... it would be to me if I lived near.

I've seen it from every direction and it has to be one of the most iconic of the volcanoes in North Island although most people would probably recognise Mount Taranaki first.

Great shots of steam vents. I have seen some steam coming out from under the snow at the ski fields in this area.
