Two Pukekos sitting on the fence...

We live in an area where there's alot of creeks/streams and ditches along the roads, these guys the NZ Pukeko bird also known as Takahe is flightless so I when I saw then wandering through my backyard I quickly grabbed my camera. I turned my back and when I looked back they were on the fence from the ground. They are quite unintelligent creatures so I've got no idea how they managed to get up high but they seemed to be very happy getting a good view of my garden.

My, what big feet those Takahes have. I think I saw them on a TV programme here. Shame they are not so bright but they have managed well enough for several million years?

hi Phil, yes they have been around for a loonnnng time here. They are the sort of birds who will cross busy roads and not get out of the way of cars.

Flightless birds sound as though they should be extinct so they must have a strong survival instinct despite their lack of road sense.

I have never heard or seen these birds before. It looks like they visit yards like the wild turkeys in the suburbs here.

it is isn't it? that's why I grabbed my camera, usually they are on the ground looking for morsels :-)

They can probably flap up to the top of the fence even though they are too heavy for real flight.
Interesting chaps, I bet they leave your lawn a bit slippery though.

I haven't seen or heard of these, either! They remind me of the wild turkeys that show up in my yard!

Cracking birds - we call them Purple Swamp Hens - but Pukekos is much better.
