Insulation

On Tuesday morning we had our appointment to get the underfloor insulation completed at home. Two young men turned up bright and early and spent about 5 hours topping up the insulation in the ceiling before making sure everything under the house was done. There is a government grant here called the "Healthy Homes Scheme" which enables those living in older houses to get up to a standard of being warm and safe. Because my house was built in the 1930s and although we have a DVS system, a heat pump and a multifuel fire in the lounge we still qualify for it, it wasn't 100% free as we still had a small contribution ourselves to pay but it's well worth it I think.

Great - it made a huge difference when we had ours done.

It is always good to have plenty of insulation, that will cut down on need for heating and cooling. Nice you had it done and for only a little money on your part. My home is well insulated and I bought a new attic fan which also helps regulate the temperature.

I like the sound of all your insulation etc. Very interesting to hear you have a heat pump. Not many houses have them here as they are so large to fit into the ground and expensive.

Hope it all works as proposed.

So you didn't have penguins doing the underfloor bit then?

I love initiatives like that that not only make you more comfortable but also cut down on the use of energy which leads to lots of good things.

We do similar things here. It's not done by government grants but the utilities finance it and they can add the cost to their ratebase which they are alowed to make a rate of return on.

That looks like a big job to do.

I'm sure it was well worth it.
That's exactly what I need to have done... both in the attic and under the house.

I'm now enjoying my first-ever home that is fully insulated and with a heat pump. What a difference it makes. You will be snug and warm even in your south island winter.

What a great service. Sometimes leaders do come up with good ideas that help everyone.

I guess this chilly winter reminded them to do it! #Allseasons

It's a good idea to do.
Excellent idea to do the installation now before the cold weather gets here and the price was right little to none.

Auckland Metropolis Museum

In amongt the modern new highrise buildings in Auckland City is this smaller vintage building that is currently for sale (I'd buy it if I had the money).   My research found that:  "It was designed by English-born architect Charles Towle and erected in the early 1930s as the Church of Christ, Scientist, the building's Graeco-Roman facade has towering columns that frame its impressive entranceway, with three ornate timber doors decorated with leadlight inserts providing access to the expansive foyer. Arched ceilings dominate the former congregational high stud space beyond the foyer and numerous picturesque windows provide a light, airy feel and an ambience many office buildings lack. The building housed congregational and Sunday school services for 70 years until it was sold and converted into office space in 2003. A significant refurbishment was also carried out with care taken to ensure that the building's distinctive character remained intact. Special architectural ...

Family

Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. And I have a question for you; when you add your blog post to a blog meme or a blog link up, do you expect the owner of that blog to at least come back and comment on the other blogs that have linked up to it including yours even if it's only occasionally?  I actually th...

Hail

Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
