With Anzac Day fast approaching many New Zealanders will be attending most of the memorials around the country in respect of those from the past and present who have and still fight for our freedom. This one in Opotoki, in the Bay of Plenty was designed by Auckland architect Rupert Morton and the cenotaph was officially unveiled by the then prime minister William Ferguson Massey in 1922. It replaced a temporary one that had been originally made by returned serviceman William Jabez Newell. The plaque has names of those who fought in both the first and second world wars.

That seems to be a nice monument. Anzac Day celebrations are pleasant to have remembered those brave souls. We have Armed Forces Day in the U.S. to honor those serving. (I was in the U.S. Army for five years but not during any dispute that I was involved in. Viet Nam had just begun when left. I at the time regretted having--I was drafted--my time taken from me. But it did give me a career of which I had none when I went in, as my first job was titled Aerospace Engineer with experience and "some college" in lieu of a degree.) Mrs. Jim's brother had his airplane shot down over Italy and he was killed. The Germans buried him in a churchyard.

It is a monument to reflection of why we fought as well a in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Ours are usually for those that didn't come home. It's quite sad. Tho some are for those who went off to fight.

Lots of war memorials in Finland. Basicly almost every cemetery has one. Local Heroes are buried in these. Then there are plenty memorians to the Unknown Soldiers (i.e. those who was M.I.A.). You´ve got nice one over there.

That's an imposing memorial. I had forgotten about ANZAC day this year. It's coming up fast.
