Spring




I drove around our neighbourhood on a grotty day last week to try and take some photos of some of the Spring blossoms I've seen sprouting up here and there. Hopefully I can get more.

I have been watching the Queen's funeral procession through Edinburgh this morning while a storm is coming through outside and while online I've become amazed at the amount of uneducated people slagging her off who don't seem to understand some of the many things she did with her life, such as serving in WW2 and being a qualified diesel mechanic - I'm not a big royalty fan but she seems like she was a dark horse to me who knew how to do more than people thought.

And we heard yesterday that most covid mandates are being scrapped so people will no longer have to wear masks in businesses, only in healthcare. Working in retail I've seen that most are pretty good with wearing them but the majority of those who don't wear them, don't have exemptions and just don't care. Welcome to mankind I guess.

The Queen certainly deserves to be honored and respected. Even if they don't believe in the royalty as an institution it seems anyone would have to acknowledge her commitment and service. Happy Spring to you!

It's a tough one, because it sort of highlights the Colonialism for a lot of people. I have always liked the Queen (though voted for a Republic last century) but I was a little uncomfortable when the F1 put up a photo of a minutes silence for the Queen but everyone in it was Spanish or Danish (and Monegasque) and they actually have their own Queens (or Kings) so she was really just a random foreign Royal to them. I didn't really get why they didn't use the pic of the British team because she was really just the Queen of a few specific countries. My then toddler met the now King when he visited her daycare....all the kids had been so excited but were deeply disappointed that it was just a guy in a suit. They had been expecting a robe and crown....ha!

Speaking as an outsider, I would say the Queen certainly worked hard for her country and seemed to go the extra mile to avoid politics. She seemed to respect all the various elements of society.

I will still be wearing a mask in supermarkets and other places with lots of people in the meantime at least.

The queen inherited a job she never asked for. She lived her life entirely under public scrutiny. She had to endure state occasions with people she might have preferred to turn her back on. Words like gracious come to mind. The haters need to separate the woman from the role. She didn't choose the role, but she filled it most appropriately and set a very good example to those who follow her in it.

The leaves are just beginning to change here in North Carolina. I love autumn and spring, but I admit I rather dread the winter!

  We have 2 new chickens, both black ladies. If any of you are familiar with British comedy tv shows you will recognize the names we have given them. This one is named Miss Brahms. And this one is named Mrs Slocombe. Auckland Metropolis Museum

In amongt the modern new highrise buildings in Auckland City is this smaller vintage building that is currently for sale (I'd buy it if I had the money).   My research found that:  "It was designed by English-born architect Charles Towle and erected in the early 1930s as the Church of Christ, Scientist, the building's Graeco-Roman facade has towering columns that frame its impressive entranceway, with three ornate timber doors decorated with leadlight inserts providing access to the expansive foyer. Arched ceilings dominate the former congregational high stud space beyond the foyer and numerous picturesque windows provide a light, airy feel and an ambience many office buildings lack. The building housed congregational and Sunday school services for 70 years until it was sold and converted into office space in 2003. A significant refurbishment was also carried out with care taken to ensure that the building's distinctive character remained intact. Special architectural ...

Westland Explorer's Monument

  In the nearby town of Hokitka (half an hour away) is the cemetery with this monument near the entranceway. It commemorates 4 men who lost their lives between 1863 and 1866 ; George Dobson - road engineer, murdered in 1866 Charlton Howitt - explorer, drowned in Lake Brunner 1863 Charles Townsend - drowned at Greymouth (probably in the Grey River) 1863 Henry Whitcombe - surveyor, drowned in the Taramakau River in 1863 Construction of the memorial started 1868 and the railings were added in 1869.
