Pike River MIne Memorial

So sad. If you haven't heard of this event here's what happened...The Pike River mine was a mine on the West Coast of New Zealand that is no longer in operation.

The disaster that occurred on 19th November 2010 lead to the deaths of 29 men, most of whom have never been recovered despite the rescue that's been going on since then costing millions of dollars.

To date no one has been held accountable. This memorial that has been set up just out of Blackball is a beautiful reminder of the men who lost their lives by their families who are still grieving.

...mining is such a danger job, a worker shouldn't have to risk life to support a family.

At least the 29 men who died have their memorial but I see the families are still fighting for answers. A huge tragedy.

It is a sad reminder of what happened though it is not one I heard of here

Wow, so many people lost. My maternal grandfather worked in mines in the US northwest. I can't imagine being in one so far down and so far away from rescue in case things go bad.

Mines scared me ever since. I was maybe 5 when my Dad made a tour with me, it was ... awful.
Some 20-30km from here in Lengede in 1963 the mine "old man" broke down. The 11 men were rescued, if interested you can read about it here, they called it the miracle of Lengede and there also is a movie about it.

Such a tragedy. Nice there is a memorial so the men can be remembered.

Oh so sad -- I read about the older mine disasters in your posts above (your later ones) and I felt so sad for the people back then, but it is even worse to know that this is still such a dangerous occupation for so many; I did not realize mining was such a big industry in your country (this is why I love blogging because I learn so much -- and I have so much to learn). Thanks for showing these -- and the memorial is very nice.
