Brunner Mine Disaster Memorial


In Greymouth there are many old cemeteries, many are the resting places of those who worked in the mines many years ago. This one in Stillwater, about 30 minutes out of town has a memorial to the Brunner Mine Disaster which occurred in 1896 in which many of the 65 miners from the explosion are buried.  I love the old Victorian railings around it.

Quite striking. Memorials such as this are always so moving. I find myself wondering about those who were lost and those they left behind.

A sad monument, but the railings look so picturesque :)

Such railings were destroyed in UK during First World War as many such monuments had their metalwork removed and contributed to the 'war effort'. Nice to see examples survived in far flung places

Family

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
