Akau - Kaikohe

One of the buildings in Kaikohe has a mural painted on both sides. The mural mainly promotes "Aroha" meaning "love" but also includes wording such as "Maanaaki" meaning "hospitality" - in whole the idea of speaking more Maori language/Te Reo.

A local non profit organization named "Akau" organized the mural and other paintings around town and students from Northtec did alot of the painting in November 2020.

Linking up with Mural Monday.

Agree we SHOULD all speak more Maori. We are a 2 language country and it's a cultural embarrassment that we are not taught Maori in all schools as a standard subject. Finland has 5% of its population that are a different language group and everyone is expected to be able to speak both languages eithin a couple of years of starting school. There is no 'them and us' and they are very proud that the cultural minority are as Finnish as anyone.

I absolutely love the geometric designs. They are stunning and colorful. It was nice to learn a bit about your "second language."

Great mural, in design and words!
Here we have "Platt" - there is a radio-station where they speak it, Ingo listens to this and when I´m with him in the car I often only understand pieces.

Thank you, btw. I added your thought.
I had that bad dream cause Ingo had food from a restaurant and you never know how that turns out.

Beautiful design and colours. I agree that Aboriginal languages should be taught in school too.
Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Amy.
