Moerewa Meanderings

The main street of Moerewa, a service town for the surrounding farming industry in between Kawakawa and Kerikeri. It's main industry though is the local freezing works AFFCO but during the economic slump of the 1980s many of the town's other industries were badly affected and unemployment soared leading to the town's population falling. In 2018 the last census recorded that there were 1632 people living there with 90% Maori, 22% Pakeha, 6% Pacifica, 1% Asian.

See that red car on the right? That is our road patrol section of national Police cars, they are the people who drive along the highways looking out for accidents and speeding vehicles.

Linking up with Skywatch Friday and Timeless Thursdays.

Road patrol ? What a brilliant idea.
Another sleepy little NZ town?

I love wide main streets. I've not been that far north but small town NZ looks fairly similar from one end of the country to the other.

Red! Ours went from dark green to blue-white. And now they have flashy yellow stripes, too.

Well done, Amy, that is a lovely shot of Moerewa. So nice to see it looking bright and cheerful. I always feel so sad when I drive through, its glory days are so long gone and its not even a shadow of its former self.

Sad to see how many small towns are suffering from unemployment.
I like seeing our red Police cars on the road - they are easy to spot and certainly make drivers slow their speed down.

oh this is nothing to do with Covid, the town has sadly been slowing down for a few years, luckily there are a few bigger towns around the area that people can find work in.

Fascinating. And I can tell you are in summer from the color of the sky. I am jealous as we have a lot of cold and snow here.
