Kaeo History



 

Another mural from Kaeo this week, this one is on the wall of the Farm and Fuel shop - I did try to find some background on it but apart from the artist being J. Marsden there was no further information, I'm assuming that it pays tribute to the town's farming history.

So a bit more about the town...at the 2018 census there was a population of 1,191 people so it's a very small settlement.  The town takes its name from the kāeo or New Zealand freshwater mussel, which is found in the nearby rivers. Kaeo is built on the flood plain of the Kaeo River and has experienced destructive flooding. It came to national attention in 2007 when it took the brunt of three major floods within the space of a few months - in February, March and July. Water flooded homes and shops and destroyed the primary school's pool complex. The local rugby clubrooms also suffered, and the club received support from the whole country as it raised funds to lift the clubrooms off the ground to minimise the risk of damage from further flooding.

Doug spent his first few years just around the corner from the single lane bridge. He was born in Warkworth as his mother went to stay with her sister there. It is an unusual town especially having been built on a flood plain. Quite pretty near the school though.

"Funny" coincidence... I have a horse today, too, and my Hubby moved in with me due to flooding (13 darn years of weekend-relationship).

Not the ideal place to build a settlement, but I'm glad the country helps out after the floods.

You certainly get about. Is there a guidebook ofpublic murals? Because if not perhaps you should compile one and sell guided tours.

Family

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
