Bees and lavender


We don't own our house, we rent it - apparently it was owned by an elderly lady before the currrent owner purchased it. It has quite an amazing garden, in the front there is a mixture of cottage garden type perennials and annuals plus some miniature natives like flax.

Around the back there are 2 large lavender plants - I'm quite amazed how many bees are covering it at the moment, they just seem to love them. Bees are one insect I try to encourage and in my vege garden I have some cauliflower, broccoli, calendula, marigolds, beetroot, parsley, thyme, salads and lettuces and spinach. I'm very aware of planting the companion way where you put herbs next to certain vegetables, it's a more natural way to garden. Hopefully by Summer there will be bees and ladybirds in there too keeping the nasties away.

Our lavender is doing well too after a hot summer. Everything is still humming with bees here. The zucchini flowers, the mint which has flowered and also the basil. Unfortunately we also get a lot of wasps buzzing nastily around these flowers. I sit outside in the morning to drink my coffee and listen to bees humming.
Your garden sounds wonderful. It should do well up there in the sunny north ...

Wow, you two found the perfect home in your new location --- your move was definitely meant to be! Love the busy bee. We went to a lavender festival earlier this summer -- it was totally beautiful and I still have a vase of it drying

I see quite a lot of lavender growing around here and it also draws a lot of bees. It sounds like you have a wonderful garden!

How lucky you were to find not only a good house but a lovely garden also.. spending time in the garden with the birds and the bees is one of my favourite things Amy 🐞🐝

  We have 2 new chickens, both black ladies. If any of you are familiar with British comedy tv shows you will recognize the names we have given them. This one is named Miss Brahms. And this one is named Mrs Slocombe. Auckland Metropolis Museum

In amongt the modern new highrise buildings in Auckland City is this smaller vintage building that is currently for sale (I'd buy it if I had the money).   My research found that:  "It was designed by English-born architect Charles Towle and erected in the early 1930s as the Church of Christ, Scientist, the building's Graeco-Roman facade has towering columns that frame its impressive entranceway, with three ornate timber doors decorated with leadlight inserts providing access to the expansive foyer. Arched ceilings dominate the former congregational high stud space beyond the foyer and numerous picturesque windows provide a light, airy feel and an ambience many office buildings lack. The building housed congregational and Sunday school services for 70 years until it was sold and converted into office space in 2003. Westland Explorer's Monument

  In the nearby town of Hokitka (half an hour away) is the cemetery with this monument near the entranceway. It commemorates 4 men who lost their lives between 1863 and 1866 ; George Dobson - road engineer, murdered in 1866 Charlton Howitt - explorer, drowned in Lake Brunner 1863 Charles Townsend - drowned at Greymouth (probably in the Grey River) 1863 Henry Whitcombe - surveyor, drowned in the Taramakau River in 1863 Construction of the memorial started 1868 and the railings were added in 1869.
