Paparoa Historical Methodist Cemetery

Last week on our travels my friend Liz and I stopped in at this very old historical Methodist cemetery in Paparoa. There's alot of old names in this place, descendants of whom are still around in the area today like Wilson and Brooks.

If there's one thing I love photographing its cemeteries, such quiet peaceful places full of history. I found it quite sad though that the place is in disrepair, it's been mowed but the ground is shifting and slipping down the hill. The oldest resident we found there died in 1868 so this would have been when the region was roughly first settled by immigrants.

I do agree with Andy, it is sad to see such an old cemetery being left to fall into ruins.

It looks like a a lovely place to be laid to rest. It would be good if someone took the reins there to do some maintenance.

What an interesting cemetery.I love reading the headstones and imagining the life of the people resting there. What a pity that nobody is taking care.

I find it interesting that with families still in the area they aren't keeping the cemetery in better condition. Of course, our town is a lot younger, but our two cemeteries are well cared for. - Margy

Cemeteries are such interesting places. A pity this one hasn't been well-maintained.

Old cemeteries are one of my favorite places to walk. Your photos are lovely and really capture a time gone by. It's hard to keep up the old cemeteries when the ground settles and shifts. Thanks for sharing.

We are a lot alike! I like to wander around graveyards but it's a shame this one is in such bad shape.
