Art at Christchurch Airport

Whenever we travel through Christchurch Airport we sometime find it a slightly overwhelming confusing experience as it isn't as easy to get through as Auckland Airport is unless you specifically know where you are going. Last time we were there last November I spotted these two large art installations hanging from the roof of the domestic baggage claim area. They were created by New Zealand artist Gregor Kegar who designed them to honour two things; South Island inventor Richard Pearse who flew an aircraft near Temuka 9 months before the American Wright Brothers first flight and Aotearoa being the land of the long white cloud.

Linking up with Weekend Reflections and the Weekend Roundup.

Those are great things to honor with high flying sculptures. I did not know about your aviation pioneer.

These hangings look like crystal salts. I will be visiting in May for a conference.

When we were in Christchurch we didn't go past the airport.
Thanks for the info on Pearse, he isn't in our history books. Yes, I guess maybe he didn't get the patent, hence not the greatest credit. Like I was doing digital recording of music way before it officially began here. It was on a US Air Force Tracking station that our company put in. We often worked shifts, and if it was a quiet night, I did this on one of the recorders there. Of course the reels were to large, not personal digital stereo then. No credit here at all, only a few knew.

I didn't realize they were to honour Pearce. Typical of Kiwis of that era - probably thought they guy was a nutter and no big deal - no records exist to verify that he was the first to achieve powered flight but someone probably mentioned it when they read about the Wright Bros in the paper months later - you can just imagine it -"Oh yeah but that bloke down the road has been flying that thing of his up and down the paddock for months - scaring the sheep and churning up mud"....drawled out over a pint somewhere

Christmas memories

B decided to put up our Christmas tree last week then he discovered that some of the lights don't work so he ordered some more online....
