Greymouth and all along the west coast have quite a few monuments dedicated to those who have lost their lives in coal mining accidents over the years. This one in town next to the Grey River is no different. It's inscribed with words that read "In memory of those lost in coal mining incidents within west coast inspection district". It was unveiled by the Tony Kokshoorn who was the mayor at the time on 19th January 2013.

Beautifully designed monument.
Great memorial but my word that looks like a grey day in Greymouth.
You seem to have a lot of mining disasters there
Beautiful but such a poignant memorial.
What a terrible way to lose your life. The monument is well designed and a reminder of how dangerous some occupations are.
A very beautiful monument.
What a beautiful monument.
Sobering sight. Mining is such a dangerous job.

It's sad to think about all the lives lost mining. Nice memorial.
Both of my grandfathers were coal miners and so I love that these men are being honored for their work with such a nice monument!
...what a horrible way to feed your family!
Very poignant.
Mining is really hard work. We lived in a coal mining town when I was a kid and I knew one fellow student whose father died in a coal mine accident and I knew several others whose parents were disabled after accidents.
Sad and important one.
