Temperatures are cooling

Views over Paihia beach and coastline

Cyclone Oma didn't reach us too bad in the end, about all we got was some rain and that was about it and it looked like it was heading towards Australia's Gold Coast. So we are back to our late Summer changing temperatures. I'm one of those people who can't stand humidity and heat, I prefer it cold but there's still plenty of sunshine here along with days where the air conditioning doesn't need to go on anymore and we don't have to kick off the blankets at night.

However I've noticed that it's the start of pear and avocado season. Avocados can be quite expensive at times, we bought 2 this morning at $3.50 each - maybe I should plant a tree because I love them so much.

Sounds like we had the same weather..it's dry and blustery now.
Yes, plant avocados..we saw three different varieties in our friend's garden.. different tastes apparently and all smaller trees.

Not a lot of rain here. I am paying $5 for 4 avocados at the Market. It is the start of the Pear season and getting towards the end of the avocado season although nowadays with different varieties the season goes on longer.

BTW some of the floor tiles shown are Victorian but I think there are some in the churhc that date back to the 15th century

I like your photo. Still keeping blankets on here. Right now it is raining... turning to snow later in the day.

In Hawkes Bay it seemed that just about everone around us had avocado trees and they would be stacked in baskets at the gate and in the height of the season one could get a couple for a dollar. Of course when they were less prolific the cost rose.

Can imagine your relief at slightly lower temps. I thought avocados were 2 a penny in NZ. Shan't complain too much about the price here. About the same I think

the combination of heat and humidity is no favorite of mine either. Makes me wet all over. :( Love the beach :)
Wow, that avocado still seems expensive! I have trouble picking out good ones. I don’t mind a little humidity with my heat!

An avocado tree sounds like a great idea. I love them too and they are very expensive here too.

The temperatures have just cooled down a bit but the sun and clear skies are lovely. I don't know why avocado prices are so high. A couple of years ago, they were under $1 a piece in season and $2-3 out of season. Now $5 out of season seems to be typical.

Auckland Metropolis Museum

In amongt the modern new highrise buildings in Auckland City is this smaller vintage building that is currently for sale (I'd buy it if I had the money).   My research found that:  "It was designed by English-born architect Charles Towle and erected in the early 1930s as the Church of Christ, Scientist, the building's Graeco-Roman facade has towering columns that frame its impressive entranceway, with three ornate timber doors decorated with leadlight inserts providing access to the expansive foyer. Arched ceilings dominate the former congregational high stud space beyond the foyer and numerous picturesque windows provide a light, airy feel and an ambience many office buildings lack. The building housed congregational and Sunday school services for 70 years until it was sold and converted into office space in 2003. A significant refurbishment was also carried out with care taken to ensure that the building's distinctive character remained intact. Special architectural ...

Family

Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. And I have a question for you; when you add your blog post to a blog meme or a blog link up, do you expect the owner of that blog to at least come back and comment on the other blogs that have linked up to it including yours even if it's only occasionally?  I actually th...

Hail

Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
