Burwood War Memorial

I do like taking photos of war memorials throughout New Zealand on our travels. This one is in Burwood, Christchurch and it says "In memory of the Burwood boys who fell in the great war of 1914 - 1918" and nearer the bottom also says "In memory of the Burwood boys who laid down their lives in World War II 1938 - 1945".

This memorial was unveiled by Colonel R. Young on 5th September 1921.

Yesterday was Mother's day so I had a chat to my mum who lives up in the upper north island. My oldest flicked me a text and the other 2 bought me a chocolate brownie. I do think it's just another day though, if you can't appreciate people throughout the year whats the point?

New Brighton

While driving through New Brighton last December I spotted this mural on the fence next to one of the local supermarkets.

Painted by artist Dove Finch it depicts the local area with the library, the bridge, beach and dolphins.

Car Chargers

These eco-friendly car chargers are cropping up everywhere all over the country for those people who have electric cars. Not my thing but whatever...this one taken in Darfield near Christchurch just before Christmas.

It seems the west coast is one of the few places including Auckland and Northland around the country getting a proper Summer. But now the North Island has just had minor flooding and excessive rain. It is so dry here that the grass in my backyard is starting to go brown. We need a little bit of rain.

Love is love

I spotted this little mural on the front of a Chorus utility box in the suburbs of Christchurch last time we were there just before Christmas. Unfortunately this one has had a bit of graffiti added to it but it shows a Kererū, a native New Zealand Wood Pigeon sitting on a branch.

Santa's hat

This made me smile - photo taken in Christchurch a few days before Christmas outside a restaurant. Someone had put a santa hat on this sculpture making it look festive.

Cycling

This is the season (Summer) where it's good to see children outside doing activities like cycling - this photo was taken on the outskirts of Christchurch in Darfield. It's a shame that so many these days are stuck to electronic devices.

Brighton Beach

Christchurch a week ago - as I mentioned in my last post we had driven over through the alps for my son to have a look at a car he ended up buying. I'm not a fan of this city, so many cars and traffic, so many traffic lights but I did want to visit Brighton Beach and I'm glad we did.

It was a very hot Summer's day - I so miss the beach. We live near the Gray River and have to drive to the nearest beach.

Game

This is a fun thing we saw last time we were at Christchurch Airport last November. It's a big chess game board that we've seen people playing with.

Coffee time

I spotted this mural in Christchurch Airport earlier this year. Situated against a wall in the cafe it talks about how coffee and different types of coffee throughout New Zealand is so necessary. I quite agree.

Blossoms

These flowers are currently on my neighbour's plum tree but sadly this tree is due to be cut down and removed in November when he plan...
