Hokitika Gorge

Last time we were out at Hokitika Gorge was Summer 2022 before we moved down here. I remember being surprised by how many campers were parked there.

The whole walk round is probably about 45 minutes and was quite easy except for 2 things.

Swingbridges - I hate them. I have this irrational fear of heights and the first bridge was at least 10 feet high from the water below but after psyching myself up I finally walked across....fast.

Apparently the water is this colour because of a mixture of glacier water from the mountains and chalk from the side of the cliffs.

At the second swingbridge I stopped when I realized this one was even higher than the first then I noped out and walked right back around to the beginning. There was one lady there who flatly refused to walk over.

Love the pic of the parking lot. I presume overnight parking of campers is allowed there? My daughter eventually partially overcame her fear of heights and swing bridges by forcing herself to appear brave in front of her little son. I love them!

It looks a beautiful park. Swing bridges are ok unless there are a number of people walking on them at the same time.

I don't know if I could do those swing bridges either. They look awfully long and rather high. Wonderful bush though. More awesome NZ scenery

...this is a gorgeous area, but the bridges don't look exciting for me.

I'm not exactly afraid of heights, but swing bridges have never seemed sturdy enough to hold actual human beings safely. (I don't blame you for "noping out" -- and I love learning that phrase! I will be using it in the future I'm sure.)

Hey I'm all about noping out if one doesn't feel like it but generally I'm okay with swing bridges.
I love the color of the water.

The color of that water is beautiful. I have the same fear of heights so swing bridges would scare me too.

I totally identify with that irrational fear of swing bridges, but I have found two ways I can (sometimes!) cross them. One is by walking slowly and stopping occasionally so the bridge doesn't swing too much (and NOBODY else on the bridge, and NEVER look down), and the other is by shutting my eyes tight and holding the hand of the person in front of me (they usually end up with very squashed hands!).
Lovely pictures :)

The water is such a gorgeous colour. And it's so lovely to see some tropical vegetation.
Beautiful!
