Kaitangata

This colourful mural is located on the side of a building in Greymouth's CBD. In Otago1862 mining began and the coal mill first opened. Unfortunately in 1879 a mineshaft exploded and sadly killed 34 miners. The F-class steam train of the same name that was once used in Kaitangata is now located in the local Shantytown tourism attraction after they bought it in 1971.

I've heard about Shanty Town - maybe I should add it to my bucket list for next time I travel down that way.

There are so many details that I'm not sure if the windows in the building are real or if they are part of the mural. Fascinating story!

Sad mural, kinda. Bet many have tears in their eyes, seeing it... and love, too. For their lost ones. Great mural, strong.

A rather sad story behind the mural. That train looks like it is about to jump out at those vehicles in the foreground.

F used to work near Kaitangata. It's a coal mining place too.
