Don'ts for women

Loving this old bicycle on display at MOTAT in Auckland. The signs in front of and on it say this - be prepared to be amused:

"don't be a fright,

don't faint on the road

don't wear a man's cap

don't wear tight garters

don't forget your toolbag

don't attempt a century (?)

don't coast - it is dangerous

don't criticize peoples legs

don't boast of your long rides"

and...

Photo from Nelson Provincial Museum

"Step through bikes first arrived on the sene in the 1880s. With no top tube a women could ride while wearing a dress. This triumph model is likely from the early 20th century".

Oh how times have changed...

I remember women riding bikes like that when I was a kid.

My sisters had bikes like that back in the 60s.

Don't they still make bikes like that? So much easier to get on.
Love all the advice

There's a lot of history in that bike. I always did wonder why a woman's bike did not have a cross bar. Finally after all of these years I finally know why.

It must´ve been tough! A tool kit would be no use for me. Two left hands.
Times sure have changed. I have a boy´s bike from the hardware store (the girl´s version was of more weight, crazy!).

I love this but now I want to know what a "century" is.

Oh yes have changed immensely. I finally got an new bike early last year. I was having trouble dismounting from the bike I had. The salesman suggested a "step through" model and I tried it and loved it. He said lots of "older gentlemen" ride them. So this older gentlemen is loving his girls bike.

F's still got a bike like that (among the various she owns) - for going shopping and riding round 'Art Trails' and poncing about with her trendy arty friends (in UK). Trendy arty types here don't ride bikes. The don'ts are abit preachy aren't they. I wonder if they were written by a woman ....

Nice rules for women of the day but wouldn't fly today. We had bikes similar to this one, in the 1970's, the Mrs. and me. I gave them for junk in early 2000's.

I really do not know why there was a cross bar on bikes anyway. Woman do not have them and the bike works perfectly! Love the old photo. Have a lovely week ahead
Too cute -- I will try to remember those rules (LOL). (Outdated even for someone of my advanced age!).... I imagine a century meant a 100-mile (KM?) ride. but maybe it meant don't try to live 100 years. That last is actually one of my goals. ;>)

Auckland Metropolis Museum

In amongt the modern new highrise buildings in Auckland City is this smaller vintage building that is currently for sale (I'd buy it if I had the money).   My research found that:  "It was designed by English-born architect Charles Towle and erected in the early 1930s as the Church of Christ, Scientist, the building's Graeco-Roman facade has towering columns that frame its impressive entranceway, with three ornate timber doors decorated with leadlight inserts providing access to the expansive foyer. Arched ceilings dominate the former congregational high stud space beyond the foyer and numerous picturesque windows provide a light, airy feel and an ambience many office buildings lack. The building housed congregational and Sunday school services for 70 years until it was sold and converted into office space in 2003. A significant refurbishment was also carried out with care taken to ensure that the building's distinctive character remained intact. Special architectural ...

Family

Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. And I have a question for you; when you add your blog post to a blog meme or a blog link up, do you expect the owner of that blog to at least come back and comment on the other blogs that have linked up to it including yours even if it's only occasionally?  I actually th...

Hail

Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
