Napier's Kowhai Sculpture


This sculpture in Napier that we saw caught my eye. In case you didn't know the Kowhai flower is well known here for attracting Tui, Bellbirds and Wood Pigeons. Kowhai is the Maori word for yellow and in 2014 this "Gold of the Kowhai" sculpture by Paul Dibble was unveiled. The 13 foot artwork is bronze and gilded with 24 carat gold.

What is really strange is that I was living just outside Napier when it was unveiled in December 2014 and yet I can't recall the unveiling and I'd actually forgotten about the sculpture. I don't even recall photographing it which, given the fact that I photographed almost everything that didn't jump out of the way, astonishes me. I'll have to go back and investigate. Thanks for the reminder.

Kowhai is possibly my favourite native flower. I have tried to reproduce it many times in applique for quilts that represent NZ things. I love that sculpture.

it is a beautiful sculpture :) It is so many years since my trip to NZ. I still have a T-shirt I bought there. With rock art image on it. This week I painted the image on watercolor paper. :)

Family

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
