Fire season in the Far North



The above photo was taken in Ahipara about 2 years ago on a Winter's day. The whole of the far north of NZ which is where we live has just gone into a total fire ban, you can't even apply for a permit. This includes fire lit barbeques, fireworks, incinerators etc. Earlier this week there was a major fire in Ahipara, a small town about 90 minutes from us that started from someone burning scrub/rubbish. It got so major that residents had to evacuate their homes. 



With New Year's eve being today for us we are hoping it will be quiet but won't hold our breath. It is tinder dry here and our siren has been going off at least twice daily. Last night we heard someone lighting fire works which is idiotic, anyway Happy New Year to everyone, thank you so much for following me and commenting on my posts, hopefully 2021 will be easier for everyone.

We saw the Ahipara fire on the TV news, scary stuff.

That's a lovely photo of Ahipara, Amy. I feel so sorry for those who had to be evacuated because of the fire, especially when it was caused by someone's thoughtlessness. It's hard to believe anyone could be stupid enough to let off fireworks when it so obviously bone dry. Happy New Year!

Happy Hopeful New Year to you and yours Amy. We lived close to devastating fires during our summer season and I so feel your concerns. Now with heavy rains they are worried about mudslides where the hills are burned bare. Yikes.

Yes, here, also, fireworks. Stupid, but in your place?! Sirens off all the time and they do it still.... sad.
We had no rain, we all should get some and have a Happy New (!) Year.

How could that person lighting fireworks be so stupid. The threat of fire is nothing to take lightly. I hope you had a nice New Year's Eve. Happy New Year!

Family

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
