It was a year ago....


Last week was the anniversary of when we first came up here to Kerikeri on holiday. A month or so later we decided to move up here and it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. No more hectic city traffic, no more noisy noise - now we have more relaxation and quiet. Living in a small town really does suit us better.  I remember us seeing lots of Monarch butterflies and a few days ago I saw this rather fat caterpillar on our neighbour's Swan plant on the edge of the footpath, I bet if I go out there now he's probably hanging from his chrysalis.

Yesterday before I started work I cleaned out our vege garden. The spinach I planted last Spring is still going strong and the Calendular and parsley plants have all self seeded. I bought some beetroot seeds and Chives seeds online so those were planted in various spots. We seem to be using herbs alot more especially in cooking so think I'll have a looksie at what else I can buy. Any ideas?

You know, living in a small town has its benefits. Slower pace and all that but I grew up in small towns and knew from when I was about six or so that I was a city kid.

Interesting about the spinach. I was going to pull ours up...but I see it is still growing new leaves. I'll leave it till the summer heat hits it.
My chives, grown from a packet of NZ seeds have finally given up the ghost. They plant lasted over five years. I wonder if I'll find any here. It's not commonly used here.
Oregano, mint, thyme, parsley, dill, lavender and celery are all doing well. I love herbs. And my nasturtiums are blooming. Love nasturtiums and use them in salads.
You must have an ideal growing climate in kerikeri for loads of vegetables. Good luck

I can't believe it's been a year! Nice shot of the monarch, we get butterflies here, but we don't have many plants they lay eggs on.

If I had the chance I'd move. Liveing in a country village is busy, too many people moveing in and too many cars on the road.

We each have our own likes and needs. Saw a couple that moved to a small town last year. They are returning to this more urban area cause, "We missed our HEB (a local grocery chain) and Whataburger!"

Family

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. And I have a question for you; when you add your blog post to a blog meme or a blog link up, do you expect the owner of that blog to at least come back and comment on the other blogs that have linked up to it including yours even if it's only occasionally?  I actually th...

Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
