Time for Autumn, time for Kiwifruit


We have the start of leaves turning brown/red/gold/orange and with it rain, wind - the usual cooler temperatures. It's also the start of Feijoa and Kiwifruit season.


Kiwifruit is grown throughout the Waikato/Tauranga areas of NZ. It is a major export here and is the 3rd largest producing country other than Italy and China. I don't care for it much, we have 2 types, golden and green - I much prefer gold.

I liked the gold too but we don't get them here. The kiwi fruit we get are often greek, hard as rocks and take ages to ripen. K uses them to tenderise meat

I eat almost anything (bar certain animal products) but I could never develop a taste for feijoas. That was a shame given that we had at least half a dozen feijoa trees in the orchard.

I can never make up my mind about Kiwifruit. It's good in a fruit salad. Is it a hybrid of some kind?

A Kiwi who doesn't like kiwi fruit? Surely a contradiction in terms. True, they are pretty much tasteless when unripe, and there's a fine line between ripe and overripe, but I love them anyway!

I plan to see some of these ripe vines as I travel through the area in the coming week. I prefer the green and my kids prefer the gold. Many years ago,I went to a pick your own orchard. I came away with buckets of the fruit.

Family

  Photo taken Spring 2024 in Auckland We have been invited to a family reunion in June 2026 which will be held in Auckland so I'm looking forward to catching up with relatives that I haven't seen in over 10 years.  This week we have: Had a good chat with a friend who has also adopted a rescue dog - must arrange a play date. I've bought some non alcoholic liqueurs to mix up for mocktails which have been very nice as I don't really drink. We had a massive wind storm 2 days ago, we were ok but a good friend who lives 20 minutes away had a bolt of lightning strike her house, the result was a blown up power box inside and part of her kitchen got burned, she had to call out the fire brigade to put it out. Hail

  Spring is throwing out some strange weather right now. We don't get snow where we live but it is visible on some of the mountains around us over Winter. Last week around 4.30am we had a very loud thunderstorm with hail. It wasn't until an hour or so later my daughter said this is what she saw out on our deck.  Clumps of hail all over the deck and on her hand. Apparently various other suburbs around town got it too.
