Catnip

It seems we've had a rather mild Winter so far. Sure, we've had the odd night where it's been 1 or 2 degrees celsius but for the most part the lowest we've had is about 5 or 6. Last week after being woken up early by B snoring, I got up to prepare my morning coffee only to find Bruno (one of our cats) was sitting on the carpet absolutely covered in mud. We had no idea what he had done or where he had been but I ended up putting the shower on warm and washing him with pet friendly shampoo. I don't think he was impressed at all.

If you have cats like us you should buy powdered cat nip which we can get online or in most pet shops here. Once in a while we rub it on their toys and usually they go nuts. We recorded Mr Cat (above).

And Floki had a rather formidable visit with the vet last week after a large lump turned up on his cheek, because it was so close to his eye they prescribed a course of anti-biotics and now he's back to his normal young mischevious self.

Btw this post is in memory of Tigger - RIP lovely boy.

Christmas cats

We have 2 new additions to our household. Above, this is Tiger - he's a 7 year old tabby cat that we adopted from our local SPCA. He chose me as his human and although he's a bit timid he loves his cuddles and pats.

And this is Floki - he's a 2 year old tabby with lots of energy. So far him and Bruno have become friends. They hold each other down and groom each other.

So of course at this time of year people get more frantic stocking up to buy their groceries for Christmas day. Work has been getting more and more busy, the roster has just come out and most people have been given an extra day or 2 just for the week. We've all been down with a nasty flu, weird as it's the beginning of Summer here, similar to Covid but it wasn't - it just knocked all of us down for a few days. Masks are no longer mandatory here but I've had enough of people coughing and sneezing on me so I've started wearing them again. Hopefully that will cut down the amount of time I'm home sick.

Bush walk with Bruno

Most of Greymouth and the West Coast is covered in bush. We have been staying in temporary accommodation and at the back of the property is a small bush.

When I'm at work my daughter, R goes and collects pinecones for kindling for the fire and she noticed Mr Bruno tagging along with her.

On my days off I went walking with them and saw numerous toadstools and different kinds of fungi, these ones are Amarita Muscaria and quite poisonous.

And here's the boy himself looking quite proud and smug, He seems to like jumping on old logs and climbing trees.

Of course we had to take one of his play toys for his amusement.

So many native trees and creeks. We are nearly entering into Winter here so the fire has been used most days.

Easter is coming...

My 2 adult children have been visiting their father in Auckland over the weekend and they managed to fit in my son's car 2 pieces of wood furniture he made in high school that their father has been storing for him. On the way home through Kawakawa he got a flat tyre and apparently didn't have the right equipment to change a tyre. B and I drove the 25 minutes out there to take him my stuff and once they got home Mr Bruno decided to claim one of the pieces (a treasure chest) for himself.

We have 9 days to go until our move to the South Island. I have been making crochet slippers for everyone, it was something to do while we were stuck at home with covid.

And in the shops displays like this started showing up about a month ago, this is only one of them.
