Library

This humungous building in town is about 3/4 finished and is going to be the new library. This town from what I've been following online seems to be dead against it. The old building is sufficient but for some reason, the local council wanted to build an extra one when Greymouth doesn't have the population for it. The costs have apparently spiralled out of control so vastly that everyones rates have been hiked up to an extra 20% on top of the 15% original rates rind alot of people can't afford it.

We got our local council/mayor voting papers in the mail last week - the candidates are a bit of a joke imho. The only 2 choices for mayor are the one we currently have (who isn't very popular at the moment) and a man who doesn't live in this region who thinks that everything should be free and that we should trade instead of using money - like what.....?!? The candidates for council are some I know and some I don't know who again, live outside of this region. Sigh.

Linking up with Weekend Reflections and the Weekend Roundup.

It's a bit of an eyesore as well as becoming a burden on the community.

It is deeply frustrating when costly projects move ahead against community sentiment, especially with limited and unconvincing choices at the ballot box.

Oh dear, I've still to read up on who is standing I our city but aiming to do that this weekend. I don't think I'll be voting (for mayor) for the one who prefers to be known as a vampire! Good luck with the mayoral election.

I used to feel that way about pricey development but at some stage we have to invest in the future - keep improving bits of infrastructure - or things start to decay and crumble. On the other hand some politicians can justifiably be accused of investing in vanity projects

Be sure to use it,.you are paying for a part of it. We have a new one way across the old one. We still use the old one.

That's such a tough situation. It's really frustrating when local councils make big decisions that don't seem to align with what the community actually needs or wants, and it's even worse when it leads to financial strain for people. It's so discouraging when the voting options don't feel like good choices either. I hope things get better there.

Another money project for the community to fund or not to fund. Do they really have a choice?

I wonder what book will be the first one you are going to read after the Library is finished Amy? I hope you have a great week ahead.

At what point does taxation become theft?
