Bye bye mangroves

For the last few months one of our local contracting businesses has been working very hard removing the foreign mangroves from our local estuary. This species has been extremely invasive so far. in this shot you can see a small mangrove bush to the left but most of the sand here was originally covered in them. The removal is part of the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration scheme.

And in this one you can see bare sand which was also once covered and an area of mangroves left in the distance. I think it's fantastic what they are doing, hopefully people and wildlife will be able to enjoy more space and room to move now that they are slowing going.

That is really interesting Amy. Here in this part of Florida mangroves are a vital part of the ecosystem and people work to preserve them. Different strokes I guess!

hi Salie, no one has anything against the mangroves but the trouble is here they have totally overtaken the harbour estuary areas. When I drive past these areas every day to and from work now there are more birds than there was before which is nice. There are many places around here though that still have the mangroves :-)

The cohabitation can be difficult, but finding a good balance like here is a win-win situation! Beautiful pictures!

thank you Barbara, that's exactly it, no one is against them, just there's too much, it'll be great to have a balance again :-)

A very pretty shore.

This is interesting about the mangroves since I was quite drawn to the mangroves we saw on the eastern inlets a few months ago. I had no idea they were invasive, but I'm not surprised as so many things grow so much faster here in NZ.

We have some mangrove swamps here, but I think they're pretty contained. Great images.

interesting. In other places of the world they need the mangroves to shelter the land from storms. Hope the wildlife will recover :)

Interesting to see. Here the mangroves were cleared to build the city. There are a few trying to take hold back in shallow water and on rocks around the Esplanade. There still are mangroves around just not right on the front of the city.
